When it comes to marketing most small business owners are wasting their time.
Most engage in one of two time wasting activities …
1/ Random acts of marketing
2/ Manual labour marketing
Now both of these will give you results such as new clients and increased cash flow BUT they are still a waste of time in the context of building a successful business.
Here is what I mean …
Many small business owners invest a lot of time running around to networking events, meeting lots of new contacts exchanging business cards, following up, having coffee meetings, presenting their stuff, doing proposals, following up, overcoming objections and hopefully closing sales.
Others will spend hours on the phone cold calling prospects working on the assumption that by the law of averages you will eventually close a sale.
Now don't get me wrong … both of these activities will get you clients.
BUT … they are still a waste of time.
Let me explain further …
When a business owner gets in a position where they need more clients and a Rapid Cash Injection they get busy typically doing either / or both of the two activities above.
Through sheer persistence fueled and driven by desperation they persist until it works … and they get clients. Relieved that the financial pressure is now off they heave a sigh of relief and switch their focus to delivering their product / service to their new clients which is what they would prefer to be doing anyway.
So how are they wasting their time then?
Well consider this …
What happens a month later, or two months later when you have finished working with the new clients?
If you have been in business for awhile then you know the answer already.
You are right back at the start of the cycle.
You have spent the money from the old new clients, finished the work for them and sent them on their way. Now you have no clients and your cash flow has dried up again.
So you start the whole process over …
Your previous marketing efforts where a waste of time because the results were not sustainable and if you repeat the process then that to will be a waste of time as it is too short lived.
When it comes to marketing you can invest your time in two ways:
1/ Chasing The Next Client – A no win situation as you wind up in the cycle just discussed.
or
2/ Build A Marketing System – Invest the same amount of time building a system that once built will continue to send you new clients and can be run mostly on autopilot 24 /7 working for you even when you are not.
You have to be smart as a business owner!
So are you going to continue wasting your time chasing the next client or invest your time building a marketing system that will supply you with a steady stream of clients?
